How it works
The method
Our process is the reason we can deliver our signature layered look, every time. It’s designed specifically for the secondhand market, where pieces sell, sellers go quiet, and nothing is certain until it’s in the van. So we work in layers. We lock in your most important pieces first, then build the supporting pieces around them.
The big difference
A project plan, not a design plan
The industry standard is a full design plan: concept boards, renderings, one big approval meeting, and then months of waiting for the order to arrive. Ours is a project plan. You choose real pieces week by week from round-ups in your weekly project email, allowing you to watch your room take shape in real-time. It’s an adventure.
The exceptions are bathrooms, wet bars, and built-in bookcases, which get drawings and your approval before anything is built.
The plan
We’re really good project managers.
Your room will be ready in six weeks, or two rooms in eight. Here’s the usual flow, through a real project: this is how The Great Room came together, week by week.
Week 1
The shell
We start with your floors, walls, and ceiling, and we draft your furniture layout. In The Great Room, we found a vintage rug, selected drapery, and determined sizes and locations for the main furniture pieces, including their heirloom piano.
Weeks 2–3
The main view
We build the first thing you see when you walk in, largest pieces first. Here we worked on the sofa, side tables, ottoman, and everyone’s favorite: the vintage lamps with preloved green shades. We also drafted the art between the two windows.
Week 4
A secondary focal point
We move on to your room’s next moment. Here it was the gray sofa wall with the homeowner’s handmade cocktail tables, plus another art stack. Every installation planned for the shell is complete by now.
Week 5
The rest of it
Each view of your room gets the same attention. Here we built the fireplace wall, styled the piano wall, and furnished the remaining corner.
Week 6
Final styling
This is where the magic happens. We finalize art placement, style the surfaces, and layer in pillows and blankets. Then we reveal your room.
