Our Approach vs. Traditional Interior Design
At Kristin Keyes Interiors, we use preloved pieces to dramatically reduce your furnishings budget and therefore your total project cost.
Let’s think about what it costs to furnish a living room with new pieces. The leather sofa from your favorite modern furniture brand? It’s gonna cost at least $5,000 after shipping, taxes, and “white glove” delivery. That cute pair of brass and glass side tables? They’ll cost around $700 each. The pair of chairs is another $1,200 each. Now add the coffee table, lamps, rugs, drapery, art, wallpaper, paint, overhead light fixture, credenza, houseplants, pillows, accessories, and on and on. You can see how the furnishings budget for your project can add up quickly.
Further, most interior design business models rely on markup as a key component of their revenue. So you won’t see the retail prices of all those pieces on your invoice; you’ll see the retail prices marked up 20%.
The bottom line: Traditional interior design models encourage designers to sell you more things and more expensive things. They are literally built to promote over-consumption.
At Kristin Keyes Interiors, we turn the traditional interior design model on its head.
While our design fees are comparable to the fees in a traditional interior design model, we work to keep your furnishings budget to a minimum by using what you already have and sourcing preloved pieces. We also never charge a mark-up on the items we find for your project.
The difference is significant. A typical project cost for a professionally designed living room is around $60,000 with around $48,000 of that cost allotted for furnishings and markup on furnishings. At Kristin Keyes Interiors, we can design a living room for less than half that cost - around $27,000.
